Cowboys, Truth, and the Signal Behind the Myth
When people hear the word “cowboy,” they picture a legend. But most of what we were shown was never the full truth. ⸻ In the American West, many of the men who actually worked cattle were Black. Recently freed and formerly enslaved people became skilled riders, herders, and ranch hands. They worked the land, moved cattle across dangerous terrain, and helped build the foundation of the cattle industry itself. The term “boy” was often used to describe them in a dismissive way.
